About
Johnny van Zyl
Johnny van Zyl is a South African fine artist whose work is rooted in the landscapes and light of the Western Cape. Working primarily in oils and watercolours, his paintings capture the quiet drama of natural scenes — from the golden hour over mountain valleys to the muted stillness of coastal mornings.
Trained in classical techniques and influenced by the Impressionist tradition, Johnny brings a contemporary sensibility to his work. Each piece is built through careful observation and a layered approach to colour and texture, creating depth that rewards extended viewing.
Beyond his personal practice, Johnny welcomes commissions from private collectors and corporate clients. His work hangs in collections across South Africa and internationally.
Artist Statement
“I paint to slow down time — to hold a moment of light before it shifts. Every landscape is a conversation between what I see and what I feel, and the canvas becomes the space where those two things meet.”
